Edwards selected as new Vice Mayor

The Duncan Banner

In a special meeting Monday night, Duncan City Council selected a new vice mayor and swore in two returning members. Councilman Tommy Edwards, going into his third year as a councilman, was elected vice mayor. “I think it’s quite an honor,” Edwards said. “I really didn’t know about it until tonight. I was surprised.” Pleased with the current council membership, Edwards noted that while the group may not always see eye to eye, each has the best interest of Duncan and its citizens at heart.

“I feel we have a good council. Everything we do we try to do for the good of the city,” he said. Returning for another term with the council is Councilman Carl Bowers, previous vice mayor, and Councilman Michael Hale. Judge George Sherrill swore both Bowers and Hale into office as each promised to uphold the laws of the state and county in front of colleagues, friends and family. Thanking their families in turn, each council member shared that he felt honored to serve the community at such a capacity. “All of us are trying to do our best to make the city a better place to live,” Hale said. City Manager Clyde Shaw reminded attendees that not only does serving on the council take up a lot of time, those who are in the positions also recover no costs. “Our City Council does this for the betterment of the community,” Shaw said. “They get no compensation whatsoever.”
